WinDVD 5 vs. Windows Media Player 9

When I playback DVD's from HDD and DVD Drive, I notice less compression artifacts when using Windows Media Player 9 than when I use WinDVD 5 Platinum. Is this caused by a lesser decoder? (these movies have not yet been compressed with DVDshrink)

    Toshiba SD6012 DVD-RW Drive
    Sony Vaio NV200/P4 1.7GHZ/512MB RAM/32MB Video/WinXP home

Is there a top dog for DVD playback? I get annoying Audio sync problems when using windows media player. And poor picture quality with WinDVD. WinDVD has the most features and I love it, but playback is jerky during chapter skips. Maybe I should try to update Windows Media Player 9.
