Problem with my Compaq DVD decoder

Hello everyone, when I was building a computer i bought a DVD player from Pricewatch.com.

Its a COMPAQ DVD-ROM DV-5700B. However, whenever I try to run DVDs I keep getting the message "Cannot find DVD decoder" or somthing to that sort. I have tried many DVD softwares. Can anyone please help me with this problem? (and no i dont have the software that came with it and lost the companies phone number whom which i bought it so i need another plan)

    thanks

Since you have tried alot of players, do you think maybe the drive is defective? I had one, where the laser spring gave out and got it replaced. Not sure on this one. Things to look for initially:

On the back of the drive it should have the letters and a "plug/jumper" whatever you wish to call it. It should initially be set to CS or cable select if you use an IDE connector. This is usually the default. Also try Compaq for tech support. I think their number is 1-800-ok-compaq.

Also please only have ONE dvd software player installed at a time.

      more than one software...

Hmm that brings up somthing interesting. It seemed i got the DVD decoder error as soon as I had TWO softwares on my computer, PC FRIENDLY and WinDVD. However i only have ONE software on and i get the error, PC FRIENDLY.....PC FRIENDLY use to work before i had two softwares installed, however WinDVD seems to be uninstalled! is there any way of checking to see what exact software DVD players you have installed and how to completely remove them?? thanks...
