Originals Wont Play On New PC

I got a new PC with only windows media player installed.

I tried to play a dvd and got the error "dosnt have dvd software installed" so i installed windvd4.

Now when i run a dvd, windvd loads then crashes just as movie starts and shows "windows has shut down windvd".

media player wont recognise dvds and if i open a .vob it says "cant locate file"

Am i missing a codec or something simple??
dvd drive recognises the dvd and also reads dvd data.
dvds im trying to play are originals.

    Thanks for any help

I use Windvd 4, came with my dvd burner. I had this happen to me. I uninstalled Windvd and reinstalled it. This worked for me. Ialso use the latest version of Direct X.

      To joe bananas

Did you purchase WinDVD4, or obtain it by "other means"?

I had a similar problem and installing the latest DirectX fixed it for me.

          Thanks tigerman8u & badmojo.
I'll try reinstalling tomorrow. And already have latest directX.
