certain dvds won't play

Could someone please help me? I have an Emerson EWD 2203 dvd/vcr combo. It works great, except it has trouble playing certain dvds. These dvds are homemade and all from the same person. When I try to play them, they freeze up and skip. Sometimes I even hear a buzzing/popping sound with some of them. This does not happen on any commercial dvds or other homemade dvds I have. Can someone please tell me what's going on? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.
