Standalone Dvd Player played interlaced DVD well, but interlaced SVCD and XSVCD badly

I've just got a standalone dvd player recently....and I tested it with DVDs and it played well. Then, I tried playing SVCDs, those interlaced videos are displayed badly on tv, like flickering and ghosy images. Same it goes for xsvcds. I wonder whats going on, but I use TMPGEnc to encode all my svcds and xsvcds. Why does this happen....do tell me. Thanks in advance.

Is your DVD player VCD compatible?
Have you tried an alternative brand of media? a RW maybe?
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!
