System region mix-up

I'm not sure if this belongs in the Playback section or the Region-Free section.... oh well.

Anyway, my problem is that my DVD writer/ROM is set to region 1, as are all my DVDs. But whenever I try to play a DVD, my players (the default PowerDVD and WM) insist that my system is set to a non-region 1 setting. Wtf??

I've looked at the DVD writer's properties before, and always it was set to region 1. I can get a DVD to play with Region-Free, but I would like to just fix my system rather than pay for a product I really shouldn't need. Also, I can write DVDs and copy region 1 discs (with the help of DVD43). I just can't play the damn things.

Any ideas?

I recommended DVD43 a short while back from reading posts but gather Region Killer 2 succeeded by far.

Well, I'm really just trying to figure out how to make my players recognize that they really don't need a region-free app. I don't have any non-region 1 discs, I just have a f*cked up system that thinks it's Australian...

Have you looked at the DVD writer web site for maybe an updated/upgraded firmware. This region mismatch could be a bug?

Thanks for the tip. I updated the firmware, but for some reason I still can't play old DVDs. Bah. I guess the PS2 can suffice for those. Kind of pisses me off that The Matrix crashes DVD43, though.

Go to "Control Panel" "System" "Hardware" "Device Manager"

Then click on your DVD ROM player and right click "properties" In the properties there is a listing for "DVD Region" at which you can set it to whatever region you want.

I've tried that. According to Properties, the DVD ROM is set for Region 1 already.
