Can't Watch DVDs anymore!

I downloaded a codec software package (at the suggestion of a friend), and i think it replaced a bunch of my codecs with outdated ones, maybe. regardless, i can't watch dvds anymore, and the package can't be uninstalled (it never successfully installed itself in the first place).

is there any way that i can just download a new decoder/player to recover my dvd player or may i have problems since the old one that messed things up can't be uninstalled?

and any suggestions as to which dvd decoder/player? my computer is windows 98 (SE, i think).

any ones that are free that you'd recommend? you sure that it won't mess things up further, since i can't uninstall the thing that messed it up first?
