    Making Region Free Backups of Movies

    I'm having some reqal difficulty making region 2, 3, and 4 DVD's region free using the following setup:

    * LiteOn HD165H DVD-ROM (Firmware region-free)
    * DVD RegionKiller software
    * DVDShrink (the latest)
    * Nero Burning ROM

    I've tried all kinds of combinations, but after my PC indicates a successful resolution, my Sony DVD Player cannot read due to the region coding still being on. Any suggestions? Much appreciated.

    Check out this program (if you haven't already):

    and it requires the pattin-couffin drivers that can be found here:

    Patin-Couffin access layer is required device I/O interface for various application, such as DVD43.

      I tried the program out, but making the DRIVE region-free isn't an issue, DVD RegionKiller took care of that. The problem is that after BURNING a DVDShrink finished product (it is supposed to remove the DVD's region coding0, the finished product is unable to be played in a Region 1 Sony DVD Player..

        That's odd... DVD Shrink should by default remove all region coding on the disc. Is it possible you player doesn't like playing region-free discs?

          Not likely. It's been playing all of the region 1 disks that were made region free by DVDShrink. I'm at a loss.. Thanks for your help, though.

              1) Are you trying to play PAL format DVDs on an NTSC-only player?

              2) Do the ORIGINAL (commercial) DVDs play on your Sony standalone player?

                That's not a region but NTSC/PAL issue. Sony purposely makes the players sold in US (R1) unable to play PAL discs. Hacking a Sony would cost more then buying a new no-name player that doesn't have these issues.

                It's true that if an R1 Sony comes across a PAL DVD even without region protection, it displays an invalid region error because R1 DVD can only be NTSC. You can try to trick the player by changing PAL to NTSC in VTS properties of every IFO file using IfoEdit, although it doesn't work for every model.

                  I'll give that a shot. Thanks for the reply. Oh, are there any guides about for using IFOEdit? Is the final product DVDShrink/Nero friendly? Thanks...Dave

                    Be prepared to be disappointed, as Sony standalone DVD players are very unforgiving and inflexible...

                      I opened IFOEdit, but was unable to find the bit where you could change the PAL/NTSC thing. IS there a guide somewhere that outlines that? Thanks again..

                        Once you've opened the file in IfoEdit, look for the word PAL in the bottom panel (Overview). Double-click on each to bring up the setting screen where you can change it to NTSC. Do it for every IFO file.

                        Indeed, it's not very likely to work properly on a Sony. Even if it accepts the disc, it may not work properly, for example the video may look corrupted.

                            No go... here's the problem..

                            I was wondering if you knew how I could convert a movie ripped by DVD Decrypter into an NTSC Region 1. It started it's life as a region 2 PAL DVD, and I was successfully able to remove the region, but when I used IFOEdit to change the .IFO's to NTSC, I ended up with a playable DVD, only it was a horrible mess on screne. I only used default settings on IFOEdit, so I'm not sure. I'd appreciate any input you may have..

                              i have the same problem, i own a DVP-NS325 and am unable to play a pal movie converted to NTSC.

                              i use nerovison express, but one thing i don't understand, if nero convert a PAL movie to NTSC, why the sony player don't want to play it?
