    WinDVD playback on Creative PC-DVD

I just started having this problem yesterday. Friday my DVD playback was fine.

Basically, I get this stutter during playback. The sound is find, the picture is fine but the stutter I see is noticeable. As far as I can tell it's reading/writing to the harddrive while playing the DVD. I don't know if that is normal or not, but it seems to be the reason why I'm getting this slight stutter in play. So, how do I go about preventing it from accessing the drive so often during play? Or is that even an option.

I've tinkered around with DVDGenie and defragmented both drives. I tried atleast three different players(powerdvd, windvd and the default player that came with the bundle). I set the DVD player on master and removed my CD-R. I'm thinking it may be purely hardware related(i.e Creative drives are garbage), so if I can't get help here I'm just going to trash the Creative and get a different DVD-ROM.

    specs:

    Abit KT7 mainboard
    AMD Athlon T-Bird 800
    256 Megs RAM
    20 gig Seagate harddrive
    Fortissimo II soundcard
Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 32meg vid card
    Some no name CD-R 8x
running Win98 SE, Direct X 8.1 and all other related updates
WinDVD 2.2(came with bundle) is the main dvd playback interface I use

Like I said all was fine until I tried to play a new DVD Saturday evening.

Have you tried playing any other DVDs, to determine whether the problem only occurs with this "new" DVD?

Have you run a DVD/CD cleaning CD on your player? If not, you should.

I tried a few other DVD's I have. I also tried different regions as well and I get the same thing. I didn't try a DVD/CD cleaning kit since the drive is only a couple of months old. But I'll pick one up after work today to narrow down the actual problem.

The thing is that the drive plays DVD's ok, I don't have any degredation in visual quality and my sound is good. I just get these really small pauses throughout the movie. And it seems to happen in intervals.

Any additional help would be much appreciated.
