xp service pack 2 & dvd rom not working

I recently purchased a new pc game (must iv) and when I insert it into the drive nothing happens. When I go to My Computer, drive F it says: no disc in drive or cannot read. I was able to play dvd prior to xp2. Is there anything I can do? I have a Cinemaster 98 C-3.0 & Toshiba DVD-ROM sd-12-02. Please help anyone, I do not know what to do. Do I need a new DVD rom? What's the best? DO I need dvd software?
