    Playing DVD after XP SP2

Dear all, I've installed XP SP2 which caused my CyberLink PowerDVD V. xp4 not to play DVDs. I get the error message: 'Copyrighted DVD... disable TV output'
My display adapter is (nVidia Ge force fx 5200) and i can't find settings for this tv output to disable.
    Help Please!!

Try UNinstalling and then REinstalling PowerDVD...

Nah, it's gonna take more than that. I'm having the exact same problem and the only thing I've changed is I upgraded to SP2 (stupidly). I can't play DVDs at all now (with any software) although I can rip them to my hard drive and watch them. I'll post if I find a solution.

If UNinstalling and then REinstalling PowerDVD doesn't resolve your issue, the following MAY be pertinent to your situation:

There have been several postings over the past few months regarding this specific matter. The solution is to download and install the older NVidia driver(s)...

"The 41.09 and future drivers have more stringent checks in the driver to comply with the latest Macrovision requirements. If the TV encoder does not support Macrovision, you will get the "Macrovision Distribution Failed" error message or a similar message depending on which DVD software player you are using. The BT868 and Conexant CX25870 TV encoders do not support Macrovision. If your graphics card is equipped with one of these TV encoders, then it will not support DVD playback with our 41.09 drivers and above."

I don't have either of those cards and I don't receive an error message. The DVD tries to start playing but it just doesn't. The DVD drive is fine because it reads DVDs and CDs with data on them. It just won't play movies. I can't play them in other media players either so something fishy is going on. I can play DivX files but I can't encode my DVDs to DivX. I'm gonna go back to XP SP1 and hopefully that will solve the problem.

            To modtang

My last response, regarding Nvidia drivers, was to "rami" (the starter of this thread)...

I've just found 7 other people with identical problems. All have installed SP2, so it's definitely the culprit. No one had any problems until they did that. Unless there's a problem with the new DirectX....

Hello everyone. I've also got the same problem. Had no issues until installing SP2. Have uninstalled and reinstalled PowerDVD so I can play the newer DVD's, but I cannot play the theatrical version of LOTR: FOTR.

Where can I get an older NVidia driver?

try using the newer trial version of power dvd or windvd and see if that happens.

if not it could be combination of SP2+ur dvd software+drivers, as only sp2 doesnt have any problems as such im using it on my main system aswell second system on geforce mx 460 vivo and had no problems.

my main system has ATi Radeon and no problems there aswell.
Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!

Do you have an nvidia chipset on your motherboard? I found that my problem was actually being caused by using the IDE drivers in the nforce driver package. If you have them installed, go into Device Manager, click on the IDE controllers tree and roll back the drivers to the default Microsoft ones.

Thought I'd update: I didn't actually roll back any drivers or install PowerDVD 5.0, I downloaded DVD Region + CSS Free and it fixed my problem. I can now play the older DVD's.

                      Thanks anyway everyone.

SP2 and Power DVD glitch possible solution

Spent half a day "salvage diving" for same problem you had playing DVD movies mixing SP2 and Power DVD . Ver 4.0 in my case.

After SP2 upgrade, I saw my screen black out on hitting play for a movie! After hunting for hours, I upgraded DVD Decoder at Cyberlink for my PowerDVD 4.0 and cured the glitch!

SP2 is said to be "unfriendly" with older DVD Decoders.

There is a decoder identifier called DECHECK that can be downloaded for free that shows what decoders you have and red "X's" them as bad guys. I'd have to go through my history to locate it again. It showed the decoders that still lurk on my C drive . They seem to get along and don't "SPook" SP2.

Don't want to disturbe any more evil spirits in there.

Hope this simple solution works for you and saves you a half day of swearing at Upgrade - Downcrashes from Windows.

Like a gal's bra, it sure is uplifting seeing things back in place again. Fathom

                          Rami,

Here is the Cyberlink-link to upgrade the 4.0 version of PowerDVD XP 4's DVD Decoder. It's a year old bugger 1/23/03 but unlike my last three wifes, it's true as a hounddog.

You wander the top captions of Cyberlink web to "downloads" and "patches" to Update PowerDVD XP 4.0. It worked for me. Give it a shot. Keep in shape!

Download Blu-ray, DVD Player, online media player, video editing & photo editing software, or burning & conversion tools. Use free for 30-days. Start here.

Like many others, I thought I was alone in suffering the post SP2 problem with Power DVD XP4 but found the download this am and am about to install. Your post reassures me that I may be on the right track.
My Graphics card is VIA Twister K with S3 Savage4 - according to the handbook so will report back when/if it works.

                              Grumpy ~ Good shuffelng.
A reinstall of your original Power DVD 4 from the location I offered for upgrade may be overkill, But that's how I stumbled toward my successful fix. We all upgrade ourselves into and out of cyber-soups. Be lucky & close the net and runners.
