computer recognizes driver but will not read cd/dvd

I just installed a DVD driver in my computer acording to the hardware profile it is an atapi 12X dvd-rom. The brand name on the unit is Delta. I am running win xp and it is hooked up on the same sczi band as the cdrw.. is there something that I need to get this to work? Or did I just end up with a nonfunctional peice of hardware? thanks
