No audio after ripping/burning backup DVD

I made a backup of a Region 1 commercial DVD which has AC3 audio tracks. I have ripped it with (1) Smartripper, (2) DVD Decrypter, and (3) DVD Shrink (all current versions).

I have created .iso images using VideoStudio8, DVD ImgTool and DVD Decrypter. After the .iso file is copied to the DVD I can play it fine on my PC (XP SP2) using VLC Player but not Media Player 10.

I burned both +-RW and +R media (my Plextor 712a converts +R media to DVD-ROM automatically). Both media play video just fine but neither play any audio (yes, I have checked to ensure the audio was converted). I even tried loading the VIDEO_TS files into VideoStudio8 and re-rendering an .mpg file. Again, video plays fine but no audio.

I have just finished converting a bunch of VHS movies to DVD using the Plextor, VideoStudio8, DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter and have had no audio problems until now.

What makes this commercial DVD different and what do I need to do to discover the problem?

    TIA

Re: No audio after ripping/burning backup DVD

Meant to add......the .iso image and the burned media both play video and audio on the PC but not on either DVD player I own.

I don't believe the problem lies with my standalone DVD players as every other DVD I have created (upwards of 100 in the past three weeks) play normally on PC and on standalone players.

But, to clarify, my five-year old Toshiba will play only DVD-ROM media. My much newer CyberHome will play anything I can play in my Plextor (DVD-ROM, -R, +R and +-RW).

Both standalone players, as well as Windows Media Player, will play the video but no audio - in this specific disk. I've had no problems with self-created DVD's.

I believe this problem is related to the existance of AC3 audio tracks on the original DVD as this is the first time I have tried ripping a commercial DVD. However, I have been unable to find any relevant information as to why this would happen.

Hope this helps clarify my problem. Thanks for your feedback.

          Here's an update.....

I recreated my DVD backup of Seven Days In May using DVDdecrypter to rip and burn on a Verbatim +R disk. It plays successfully in my PC (both DVD drives), and my 5-year old Toshiba (the disk was written as a DVD-ROM by my Plextor burner) but not in my Feb 2004 CyberHome 300. Video plays fine but no audio.

I have changed all the menu settings relating to audio trying bitstream and LCPM to no avail. The original movie was a Dolby 5.1 audio stream and the player says it supports Dolby but obviously that isn't the case.

There have been several other commercial movie DVD's which won't play audio in that player (The Crimson Pirate comes to mind) until I first play a DVD which does play successfully. I then remove that disk and put the previously unsuccessful DVD in and it will play. Looks like a bug in the player but I don't understand exactly what is going on. Any ideas?

Life can be full of surprises...

Did that. No answers there either.

              But thanks for the suggestion.

Found the problem.... Here's the reply from CyberHome:

"This problem is a known issue with DVD disc that have a soundtrack encoded in Dolby Digital Mono. The Product Development Dept. is currently working on the issue and will release a bios fix on our web page in the near future."

The only two titles I own which have Dolby Digital Mono are The Crimson Pirate and Seven Days in May - both from Warner Home Video.

BTW, there was nothing in the video or CyberHome forums with this information. I'll post this there now.

                    1) How does this explain your earlier statement, to wit:

"Both standalone players, as well as Windows Media Player, will play the video but no audio - in this specific disk."

                    2) To what extent and on which players and/or PC do the ORIGINAL DVDs play with audio?

Here's one of the postings from the link I provided to you:

"First off...when I brought this thing home, I thought it was the greatest buy ever. $20 and it seemed to play every DVD I threw into it. All I can say is that there is something wrong with the Audio output on these players, because about 15% of the burned DVDs I put in (high-quality media) don't have any sound. I test them on my computer, re-burn them, try fiddling with the audio settings...NOTHING makes the sound work."

I might have been trying to play a DVD +-RW in my Toshiba. It handles only DVD-ROM's. Can't explain Media Player issue but it won't play sound from this disk at all either.

They are intermittent on the Cyberhome but will play normally on the Toshiba. Usually I can get them to play on the Cyberhome by first putting another type of DVD in it then switching to the problematic one but not always.

I did look through the link you provided but didn't see this. Hope the poster see's Cyberhome's reply because it sounds like a fix is in the works.

                      Thanks again for your help.
