The Daewoo 3000N plays both NTSC and PAL *without* any hacking whatsoever: it's a choice in the setup menu and there's even a button on the remote specifically for choosing.

I don't know why they would bother to put fully accessible PAL capability on a region-1-only (as sold) player, but they did. I suppose this would make it possible to play Region 0 PAL discs, but I've never heard of a Region 0 PAL DVD, though theoretically they could exist.

and I'm tellin ya, there are no other output/display/etc settings on the Daewoo. Closest thing is "TV Type": NTSC / PAL / Auto, all of which I tried, just in case.

What 'output setting' are you talking about, if not PS/LB/Wide? At any rate the term "4:3" appears nowhere in the instruction manual or in any onscreen setup menu.

Meanwhile I'm just thinking how odd it is that the UK DVD would be stretched horizontally but the German stretched vertically. You'd think if this Daewoo had inaccurate PAL-NTSC conversion you'd get just one or the other.

Your well-thought-out schedule seems to indicate that you have ratio discrepancies with regard to all of the tested DVDs including, as I suggested (but in your case the proportion disparity appears to be reversed:

The disparity specifically regarding PAL format DVDs may be due to the player's method of adjusting for the difference between the 50Hz and 60Hz refresh rates of NTSC and PAL formats, or the way it accounts for the difference between 720x480 and 720x576 overall resolution, or the difference between the number of scanlines on NTSC and PAL televisions...

Not to hijack this thread, but what is the mechanism (what setting on the disc) tells the DVD player that a disc is anamorphic widescreen (16x9)?

I have a disc for which I have to MANUALLY tell my 16x9 TV to display it in widescreen, where most discs trigger the TV automatically. I'm curious as to why this one doesn't do it (yes, it is truly an "enhanced for widescreen TVs" anam. disc).

I have used IfoEdit in the past, but that's not to say I'm good at it! Where do I look, and can I change the "flag mechanism"? How? Many TIA.

If you look at the movie's IFO in IfoEdit, either on the summary page or on the VTSI_MAT table at byte 0x100, you can set it to play as 16:9 automatic letterboxed.

Thanks, Les; I looked and both the Summary info and the VTSI_MAT address 100 show "16x9" and "Automatic Letterboxed" so I dunno why it doesn't work. Not a big deal but if you have any other ideas please let me know.

How's your TV setup? Remember, the settings in the IFO take precedence over those in the VOB so you should be OK, if your TV is setup OK.

I'm off to bed now mate (almost 1am here). Talk tomorrow (errr... today) and we'll get to the bottom of it.

In the meantime, try letterboxed top and bottom cropped and burn on an RW and see.

Les, I had looked only at the individual VOB. I looked again at VIDEO_TS.IFO instead and in VMGM_MAT it shows "4x3" and "Pan-Scan & letterboxed" so I think that may be where the problem is. I'll play with it some more.

You're welcome mate. You really need only change the video attributes fro the domain (VTS) in question, but it can't hurt to change them in VIDEO_TS.IFO, too.

However, it is very strange to be authored this way. If the video really is anamorphic widescreen, it would be extremely bad authoring to have the attributes set to 4:3 P&S.

I can't understand what makes this a 'real' hijack. The original discussion was about ratios. To continue with a follow up question - can't do any harm with the original poster.

I have never seen a thread where the original threadstarter quarrel about that his thread has been hijacked. If that was the case - I would have made a threadsplit.

It's not against the forum rules to hijack threads. Yet...
