Philips dvd hack needed

I have a Philips dvp 320/00 that I bought here in Ukraine. In several places I have seen a reccommended hack of starting the drive, opening it, and entering "9,9,9,0" . This is not working!! Absolutely nothing appears on the screen and it is still region restricted...what can I do to make this region free?

I looked into that link. Problem is that I don't have the universal remote and probably can't get it in Ukraine, and I don't have a palm pilot.

I left a 9 out when I wrote my first post on this forum, but that is what I started with. Tried it about 5 times...nothing comes up. What's 4 x 9s?? Pardon my ignorance...

Four nines. And you are then putting in the region code after the 9 9 9 9? For example, 9 9 9 9 1 to play R1 disks?

Yes, four nines and then a region code. The other places on the web I've found these instructions said I could then enter "0" and make it region free. That i tried 5 times. I just tried chaging it to region 1 and 2, got the same..nothing. As I understand it after the 4th nine the screen is supposed to say something abou "region code" and then I press it. what happens is this: (1) I turn the dvd on with no disk, (2) I open it (3) I enter the four nines from the remote (4) I enter any other number...be it a ) or 1 0r 2 or whatever, and (5) The little red light on the player that flashes normally whenever I push ANY button on the remote goes on and stays on (6) The player is "locked up"...no buttons but power work on the player, nothing on the remote I push changes this condition, it just stays stuck until I turn it off and turn it on again!
