    Recorded DVD's Wont Play On Stand-alone Machine

    DVD movies that I've backed up (using DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter) will play on the computer, and my inexpensive "Nontaus" player, but not on my Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder. Both machines are multi region, and I've backed up the movies to zone 1, as not to mess with the DVD drive in my laptop.
    I've tried tech support at Panasonic, and they were absolutely no help at all. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

    As you may well realize by now, not all standalone DVD players are capable of playing all brands and/or formats of burnable media. To determine the capabilities/limitations of your specific brand and model of standalone DVD player, as well as media compatibility, go to:

    Your Panasonic standalone player is probably not capable of playing back the SONY DVDs (whether due to brand or format - DVD+R or DVD-R) you've just started using...

      If your burner supports Bitsetting change it to DVD-Rom. This only works if you are using +R media.

          I do think they support DVD-ROM - a bought commercial DVD is a DVD-ROM.

            The Panasonic DVD recorder uses -R media. Is there a chance that DVD Shrink, or DVD Decrypter did not finalize the disk after it was burnt? I haven't seen anything that mentions it, but it was a thought.

              You can always try to finalize the disc afterwards in DVD Decrypter.

              Tools -> Drive -> Close -> Disc

              I have seen some problems with finalizing discs in the support forum for DVD Decrypter lately.

                  Have you previously successfully played any Region 1 burned DVDs on your Panasonic set top recorder? If not, I'd suggest you try burning a DVD set to your Region (4?) and see if that plays on your Panasonic.

                  Also, it seems that your Panasonic "likes" memorex media...

                      I have played movies I've backed up to Region 1. It's hit and miss with what works and doesn't. Up until changing media, I had no problem playing backed up movies. That said, this evening I backed up one with DVD Clone2, and it worked perfectly. I will try Memorex, and see if that makes a difference.

                        I'm having the same trouble. I have previously used DVDShrink in conjunction with Sonic and DVD Decrypter to back up copies of my collection onto Ritek DVD-R discs. There are a couple I just got though that won't work - the copies will play fine on my computer, but not on my standalone machine. I'm using the same software and brand of media that I did before (for the copies that did work properly).

                        This newbie would appreciate any advice that anyone could offer me.

                          Hi and welcome to the forum, cyberfugue!

                          You could use this freeware program to see if your old (working discs) and the new ones do have the same media code. Sometimes even if the packages looks the same - the media codes do have changed.

                            Thank you (and for the welcome also). I'll check that program out and compare the media codes.
