DVD-R Paly back Problems

A friend converted a VHS tape to DVD-R to run on a Compaq 1200US DVD laptop. When it runs it makes a bunch of noise and gets very hot, in addition after about 2 min or less the whole pc freezes up, same thing happend on an HP LAP DVD and a Toshiba DVD. Running software is Intervideo WIN DVD 2000.. I know Zero about DVD or Video thats why I am here.
