Anamorphic Widescreen

I have a DVD in Anamorphic Widescreen which on one of my players makes it look like one is looking through a very thin letter box. My player cannot alter this in the set up menu. Is there any software around that I ca use to change this to something more viewable.

Is your player set to widescreen or 4:3. If you have a 4:3 TV, set your player accordingly.

The movie may have been shot in a wide aspect ratio. Widescreen will show the whole pic with black bars on the top and bottom. But I take it that your picture looks squashed in the vertical plane and tall skinny people look small and fat.

This really is a setup function. Are you sure you can't set your player to "auto" or "4:3"

one of my players does allow me to set the picture up but the other will only set to 4.3 or 16.9.
The picture doesn't show people squashed it's just a very narrow slot.

Just watching the telly. Oz 203 for 8, looks like we might just squeeze this one

Yep Frank - a real interesting match. No McGrath but we still had our chances. The last 2 in your first dig went for 59 and, of course, when you were on your knees, the 10th wicket in the second dig added 51. Those 110 runs are the difference, I think.

Now onto your problem (mine is that there is no chance of the next 2 days raining cats and dogs in Birmingham). If the characters look natural, then this may be the actual scope of the movie. Many are shot in 2.35 these days. You can actually measure the aspect ratio as it is displayed. The biggest I have seen is 2.80 (almost 3 long for 1 high).

This may not be the right place but...

I copied a TV prog for a friend in Denmark and put it on a DVD with DVDLab. I've tried it on one of my players and it freezes so I read your turoial " How to check if your burn is good" and the disc checks OK. I have been using DVD-R should I try a switch to +R ?. I am also doing a Disc Quality Check with Nero Tool Kit but in truth I don't know what I'm looking at. Have you done aguide for that also. I do find the guides very useful.

What is the player? Check media/player compatibility and find media that works well in the player.

The disk quality check will tell you the number of PI errors and PIF errors. There is a standard for these. PIs in 8 consecutive blocks should not total more than 280. PIF is more critical (and more important). There can be no more than 4 PIFs in any sector. Otherwise, you may consider the disk "bad". See here.

As for the cricket, I am abhorred at the fact that Aust lost. I guess you can point to a number of factors - Flintoff's 2nd innings and his great opening spell in the 2nd inns, the great 9th and 10th wicket partnership in England's first innings, and even our dogged stand this morning. However, I tend to think the decision not to give Pieterson out 1st ball in the 2nd inns, combined with a number of dodgy LBs marred the game. Still, it was exciting - more exciting than any other sport, eh?

On to Old Trafford. Our boys will be very gee'd up.

an ALBA ( cheapo but usually plays anything) this is the one with the narrow letterbox
A SHARP which cost 10x the ALBA but doesn't play Region 1

I predict that the test at Old Trafford will be a washout. I've lived in Manchester for over 60 years and there are 2 things that guarantee rain. A test match at Old Trafford or a visit from the Queen.

Those G05 have a mixed rep - there were some bad production runs. I'd try something else. The PIFs are OK, obviously, byt the PIs are a bit high.

There are region hacks for almost every player. What models do you have?

The first box of these RITEK were fine but the second box has given me alsorts of problems so I guess what you say is correct.

I'm going buy some different discs off the Internet ( a reputable source) sometime this afternoon, it'll be worth a try.


The player is SHARP DV 620, I'm sure there are only hardware hacks.

I'm looking at buying a stand alone DVD recorder as my wife tapes quite a lot of TV but then can never find where it is on the tape. I'll be looking for multi-format etc. for that

Looks like a bit of a glitch near the end doesn't it. Still, it read. Was the disk clean?

How did the PIs look at that point?

I understand Kasper was actually not out. Shades of Melbourne 1993. Same margin almost (3 runs there) when McDermott was given out off his helmet!!! Of course, who's to tell he wouldn't be out the very next ball? Strange game - a view is emerging here is that a tie would have been the best outcome as neither side played consistently well enough to claim they were entitled to victory
