PowerDVD 5, loses skin choice

PowerDVD is making me crazy, everything was fine until yesterday when I had the bright idea to change the location of screen captures. The default is DRIVE:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\CyberLink\PowerDVD\Snapshot and I wanted it somewhere more easily accessed with my Graphics Editor. Anyway, next time I used the player, I noticed it had reverted to the default skin. So fine, I reset it to the skin I like and am used to. Quit and restarted, back to default skin.

Finally decided to put the screen capture back to default, but still no matter what I tried it would always restart with the default skin. Uninstalled and reinstalled the program, same problem. Even checked the registry and found the entry for the skin, and watched it change when I set my preference, but as soon as I restarted the player the registry setting would change back to the default.

Anybody ever experienced this minor but annoying behaviour?

may sound like a stupid question, but when you uninstalled/re-installed powerdvd, did you delete the 'cyberlink' folder in C:\program files ?

it should ensure the settings are reset

Yes the folder was gone, however I didn't check to see if the hidden Application Data folders still existed.

I just downloaded a patch and can't remember if I had installed it previously or not, will give it a try and report back.

Well, surprisingly the 5.0.2214 patch solved the problem, surprising since it wasn't listed:

The patch is relevant for users who have experienced problems with:

Audio

• Output mode was still enabled after selecting SPDIF in Speaker Environment
• Audio stream changed when moving the mouse (Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer)
  

Playback

• Subtitles overlapped when displaying dual subtitles
• Subtitles were not displayed even after it is selected under configuration
• Parental-controlled DVDs login and password prevented the user from playing movies in Win 98 SE/ME
• Video displayed incorrect aspect ratio when playing DVD-VR disc

Anybody experience a problem in PowerDVD where it doesn't display subbies, despite selecting them in the menu? You have to turn them on by clicking on the ... icon (they are selected by Display subtitles is not ticked).

Version 6 only (v5 works fine).

solution: use media player classic

I was going to say I had the same problem with v5, but they seem to work ok after patching.

Did you try the patch for v6?

Yeah - months ago. No dice. Showtime is better.
