Can't playback disks bought in Malaysia

I have a similar problem with DVD movies bought in Malaysia. They play fine on any stand alone DVD player, but won't play at all on the PC. When I insert the disc, it's simply not recognised. The disc spins, it *tries* to recognise it, but then just gives up. Result is the PC thinks there is no disc present. I have 3 PCs in the home, all have the same result.

As I mentioned, these movies play fine in all standalone DVD players that I've tried. What can it be? I read on another forum something like some DVD movies have a code writen to the disc that prevents them from being read by PCs that have DVD copying software installed on them. Is this true? If so, how to get round it? Could the authors of these backups have included something in the disc to prevent them from being played in a computer, in case they are, em, "backed-up" again?? I'm stumped. Any help appreciated!

Sounds like el cheapo media that your drive don't like.

Hello

It may be that they are not pressed commercial discs. If they are actually DVD+R or DVD-R, it may be that your PC burner or ROM doesn't recognize one or the other format

Also, are you sure they're DVDs and not CDs?

Hi ben ifa,

By any chance your movies are not DVDs but video/audio CDs with .cda file extension. You can play CD with .cda file extension in your PC with Windows Media Player 9 or 10, Media Player Classic, or VCD player software. If my memory is still OK enough, you can copy the .cda files from an audio CD thru Windows Media Player's rip or copy option. You can register the player to play CDA files by doing the following:

1- In Control Panel, open Folder Options.

2- In the Folder Options dialog box, click the File Types tab.

3- In the Registered file types list, scroll down to the CDA extension to see which program is registered to open the file type. The associated program, shown in the following Details for 'CDA' extension area, should open whenever you place a CD in your CD drive or when you double-click a CDA file. If no program is displayed, register the Player by completing this procedure.

4- In the Details for 'CDA' extension area, click the Change button.

5- In the Open With dialog box, select Windows Media Player as the program that you want to use to open CDA files.

6- Make sure that the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box is selected.
