Lord of the Rings - Music Skipping

I have recently purchased the Lord of the Rings 12 disc box set.

I noticed soon into the first film that the music soundtrack would skip every say, half second, rather like a popping sound; as if a few samples are being missed, like a skipping mp3. I noticed however that the general audio soundtrack didn't do this, and also the music in the credits was fine.

I have tried playing this on a number of different DVD players and adjusted sound settings from 5.1 to stereo, and had a friend try it on his DVD player with his version of the DVD; it did exactly the same for him, and my version did the same thing on each DVD player.

Somebody told me that apparently the conversion of LOTR to PAL "wasn't succcessful," and that basically it's a problem at the end of the people making the DVD.

I just wondered if anybody knows anything more about this, the exact reason for it, and perhaps a way of fixing it?

    Many thanks

This is the original disc that has the sound problem? I think I would exchange it for another box set and see if the results are the same.

Like I said, it happens on my friend's DVD as well, so it's obviously a universal thing. I just wondered if anybody knew why this was, and if there's a way of stopping it. The disc is perfectly fine, it's to do with the production.
