Converting AVI to DVD

i have been downloading files off the internet and trying to convert them so that i can play them on a dvd player. It seems like i have tried everything. I have went with Lt. Columbos guide but have found no use and cannot understand it. Is there a very clear and/or detailed way to convert the avi's to dvds. I am new to this kind of stuff. Please anybody help.
