    sound stutters as non admin

Hi, I seem to have a problem for which I have searched for an answer to no avail.

My sound stutters when I play DVDs. It doesn't stutter when I play CDs. I have tried different players and its all the same. I've tried reinstalling the player as well.

However if I play the DVD from an administrator account it plays fine.

I've checked video card settings as I read this maybe the problem - but they are consistent between the two user accounts.

    Any suggestions?

The system is a dual core 2 GHz laptop with an ATI x1600 and a Hitachi/LG Dual Layer DVD-RAM

    Thanks in advance

    sorted

Managed to sort it out by rolling back my computer to a much earlier date and then reinstalling a dvd player.

Strange that it wouldn't work when I tried to reinstall without a rollback though - I guess it must of kept certain settings cached or in registry.

Maybe some source of audio codec installed that caused only on certainuser account the problem

Ya I thought about that however I think that you can only install Codecs while logged in as an admin - thus I presume that the admin account would have whatever codecs the user account has.

Anyhow the problem has resurfaced. So still trying to sort it out.

Is there a way to "reset" my audio codecs to the default codecs without manually uninstalling each one?

My favorite trick is to set up all my programs on the default admin account,
make sure they work. Create a new admin account. Then change the old one to limited. Turn off fast user switching.

Its a good idea - but what do you do when you install programs after your account is already set up? Switch it back to an admin account?

I don't use fast user switching as I have my computer setup on a domain.

tried playing your dvd with media player classic? it'll determine whether it's codec or driver related since you haven't specified which player you're using

                Hi - thanks for response.

I have tried a variety of players - powerdvd, cinemaster, windows media player 10 and an old elsa player.

What is media player classic? Is this what you're referring to: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...er_Classic.htm
I will try installing it now.

The Media Player I downloaded above still stutters. But now I am also getting stutters when running as admin.

it's not a codec problem. what if you decrypt the dvd to your hard disk first and play it from there?

Thanks for the reply. Yup it plays smoothly from the hard disc. Its also playing smoothly when run as an admin again, both directly from an Admin account and from a User account when selecting "Run as" to run the dvd player as an admin.

Which makes me think its not a memory issue or anything along those lines and its clearly not the DVD player. Nor does it appear to be the codec as you correctly surmised since it runs from the HD...

                      Any other suggestions?

just so we're clear, it doesn't skip when you play from the hard disk with a limited account? checked DMA? http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=44808

use admin account, uninstall & re-install sound drivers

Thanks for all your help anonymez. I did try that and it didn't work either. Thus I did the one thing almost guaranteed to work.... a clean install of XP. Fortunately it did.
