Are there any software DVD players capable of 'upscaling'?

I've read that the new (or last?) generation of DVD players with HDMI/DVI interface can upscale a 720x576 dvd picture to HD resolutions creating an artificial high definition picture.

IT occurs to me, shouldn't my computer be capable of this? It would be useful for connecting a PC to an HDTV, or just watching on computer monitors, which are almost the same spec as an HDTV.

So, is there any software that can upscale DVDs? If not, why????? You'd think it would be all the rage.

not so much the player but the decoder; ffdshow does upscaling quite nicely. however since we're talking hi res it also requires a powerful system, depending on which filters you use.

download & install from http://www.x264.nl, go start-->programs-->ffdshow-->video decoder config, set raw video to all supported.

experiment with resize, sharpening, blur & nr, etc. google will give you some generic settings

Not sure if this works or not, but when I was at the Sony store a few weeks ago all their demo computers had a WinDVD Blu-Ray edition, that plays HD sources. If it plays Blu-Ray at the native resolution, it might be able to upscale DVD.

Not sure where you can get ahold of the program however.

afaik blu-ray is just mpeg2/4 etc in mpeg ts, even ffdshow should handle the decoding part. probably just added support for drives and structure

Yes I did some snooping, I opened the disc and there is no VIDEO_TS folder nor are there VOBs.

There are like 3 different things, there's seperate video and audio, that get mixed by the decoder/program.
