beachbumm,
to answer you first Q ... phillips DVP5140/37 DVD player (usually found real cheap at Wal-Mart) ... it is just fine ... but right now you can get Philips DVP5960/37 at Best Buy on sale for ~ $70 and it has USB port in fornt of it ... if you want to play anything with USB ...
BTW, both Philips are DivX capable ... meaning it will play all of your DivX and XviD AVI videos ...
And as Gary and Soup mentioned Taiyo or Verbs are the best ... and if you have such a picky dvd player ... then go with DVD+R's since you can bitset them to DVD-ROM and that should fix your problem no matter what media brand you use ...

thank you gonwk, the movie froze and pixelated as well in my xbox, but the same movie played fine in my portable dvd player (poloroid). I checked the capabilities of my burner, hp940, and it has the latest firmware, but does not support bitset for dvd-rom, i might need to look into another burner, any ideas on that?
I can put the hp burner i have in my daughters machine and replace mine with something reasonable that will do the dvd-rom.
I will indeed make a trip tomorrow and pick up a new dvd player, thank you for the info.Comment

Hi beachbumm,
Sorry haven't gotten back to you any sooner .... been Busy with the Family and Work ...
1) As far a Good Burner that is capable of "Bitsetting" ... I don't want to lead you in the wrong way ... but here it goes ...
I have BenQ 1640, 1655 and I swear by these 2 babies ... knock on the wood ... they Aer still running should have bought me some back-ups ... but I was stupid and I DID NOT expect the darn company to close its doors. OK since you probably can't get a BenQ ... then go with "LiteOn" ... I have seen some good feedbacks from users on Lite-On LH-18A1P ... Make sure it Bitsets !!!!
Anyway ... do a google search on the model and you will find more Reviews and a Place to Buy it Cheap!
2) These Philips DVD Players will play anything and everything ... I have a 5960/37 ... and so far whatever I have thrown at it ... it has played.
3) You Flash Drive ... I assume it is a Thumb-drive and it is probably up to 8GB ... the USB Drive on Philips 5960/37 will play your music files no matter what format ... MP3, .MV2, ... you name it
ALERT: If you connect a HARD DRIVE via USB to this machine ... you MUST powered it externally ... for some reason the USB Drive on Philips it will not generate enough power for playback.
When I connect my (get this) 320GB External Hard Drive with all Music Videos it plays it wonderfully ...
BUT your Drive has to be FAT32 formatted (No NTSF), External Drive has to be powered separately ... best way is to A) Plug in your Hard Drive to Power, B) then with DVD Player power on ... Plug in the External Drive USB ... viola ... you got hours of MV ...
By the Way, Philips will play each clip one after another as long as they are all under the main directory.
4) Beachbumm, from now DO NOT LABEL your Back-ups with the paper Labels ... they are the WORST ... the glue in them will shrink over the time and WARP your DVD Back-ups and make them unplayable.
