Are 16x9 movies cropped?

Hope this is not too off topic, couldn't find a better place to post this.

Everyone knows that 4x3 dvd movies had the edges cropped off, but what about 16x9 dvd movies?

Since roughly half (exact % not important) of the dvd movies that say "widescreen" are 2.35:1, and the other half are 16x9, I was wondering if those 16x9 movies were filmed and shown in theaters in the 16x9 aspect... or are they also cropped from a 2.35:1 theater version?

No, of course they don't. If you can't see the edges, you have your player set to Pan & Scan.

ALL DVDs are either 4:3 or 16:9. The fact that in 16:9 some movies have aspect ratios of 2.35 is not relevant. It just means you will have a letterbox effect when watched on either 16:9 or 4:3 TV.

My question may not have been clear. I'll try to rephrase. Say you rent the 10 latest dvd movies at the video store in widescreen format. Say 5 of those are 1.85:1 with no (or unnoticable) black bars on a 16x9 display (and the rest have noticable black bars).

Typically, are those 1.85:1 movies cropped from a cinemascope (2.35:1) movie, or were they filmed in 1.85:1?
