dvd wont play on my PC, only stand-alone

    hi,

a while back i used a dvd/vhs combo stand alone player with dvd recording capabilities to transfer a home vhs video on to a dvd. unfortunatly i can only view my home dvd on my stand alone player but not my computer. is there any way for me to watch it on my computer? i was hoping to do some editing. it doesnt make sense to me how it plays on the vcr but not the pc??? thanks.

Did you finalize your disc on the standalone?

I just had the same problem last week, till I realized I did not go into the tools menu and finalize the disc.

After that I had a dics the was compatible in all my players and PC.

        Good Luck

No. If your recorder is like mine, put the disc back in and go to the menu to finalize. Finalizing the dics just basicly closes it and makes it readable on other players. Those instructions should be in your owners manual.

If manual is not available, post make and model of your recorder and we maybe can work with that.

                  hi,

im starting to think that my disc was not finalized. it was created on a friends stand alone player(im not sure the make and model, SONY i believe), it plays on my stand alone(JVC), but not on my PC. is there any type of software that i could get/dl to finalize my disc to play on my PC? my PC doesnt even recognize a disc in the drive??

or is there an external way i could upload the info to my computer via USB port? could i play DVD in my stand alone while running a XLR(?) out to a USB in on my PC? or something like that? any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

                      chewy,

no machine is available to finalize disc as recommended. a friend created the disc but has since moved away. i dont have a standalone player with finalizing capabilities. im seeking an alternate method to do desired task if there is one.

                        @ vash

Just curious, Are you saying the JVC that they will play in is not a recorder?

yes, (JVC HR-XVC18B) is not a recorder. a friend with a SONY VHS/DVD stand alone recorder made the disc for me, but has since moved away. i dont know the model and i was hoping to solve this myself and avoid mailing my dvd off to my friend, if he still has the same player, to try and get it finalized...etc.

my goal is to upload the dvd or vhs original in some way to my pc so that i can make copies for family members. will any standalone player with recordable features work for finalizing?(maybe a neighbor has one that could help me out) thanks.

Not being a recorder it sounds like my theory of finalizing more than likely is not the issue if it plays on a regular standalone.

                            A couple of questions however:

                            1. I am assuming you can play other DVD's on your P.C. Correct?

                            2. What program are you trying to play the DVD?

                            3. When you put the DVD in does your computer see it under My Computer/DVD Drive?

                            4. If it does see it can you right click on the DVD drive to explore and see files or folders and if so what type are they? ie: Video_TS Audio_TS
