    Moving Up from VCRs!

    Here's a little background:

My Dad loves to record some Horse Racing stuff pretty much everyday for 3 to 4 hours. He is still recording all of this on a VCR. This is because this setup is in another room, not in the main living room. This is so that it doesn't get in the way of anyone else who would be using the main living room. Every night, he would watch the tape he recorded in the main living room, hence why its on a movable media.

    Question:

So I would like to find a way into moving him into the digital era without spending too much money, and making things more hassle than he already knows. Recording onto a USB stick, or SDCard would be ideal, but recording to an external server on their home network would be fine.

Any suggestions on how to achieve this and what to get please?

You can get a PVR (aka DVR) which will record to dvd, some record to external HDD's too.

Or, get a USB tuner into a PC, then you could output that to usb stck or sd card. But then you need something that will playback from usb or sd cards.

Or get a twin tuner PVR in the main room, so he can record on one channel whilst still allowing someone to watch something else.

Im not sure any of these options are easier than what your dad is doing now though.
