DVD Drive Refuses To Become Region-Free

I have a Packard Bell which I purchased a few months ago. I have checked the drive properties and found that the model of the drive is "HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8160B"
I'm not sure of the manufacturer as it only says standard DVD-ROM Drives.

I found that I have only 3 tries before it locks to a region, and dont want that to happen so tried to flash the drive with a firmware, but found that there doesnt apppear to be one for this drive.

I have also tried software like DVDIdle and RegionFree but these just dont seem to have any effect and just cause POWERDVD to not play the DVD's at all.

Does anyone know of any other way around this or am I just left with the bill for a completely new drive altogether ? ? ?

There's a utility called "Hitachihack" that's supposed to oversome region-protection. Haven't got one of these drives so can't confirm this but the utility is linked here:

Incidentally, this is an LG drive. You'll need to use DVD Genie or Region Killer to overcome region-protection in your software player as well.

      Hi.

Thanks for your advice, however, having tried Hitachihack I have found that it wont even run for me. It just gives an error message asking me to install the aspi layers which i have already done.......

      (downloaded aspi layers from adaptec.com)

Do you have any other idea's of what i mite be able to do with this,
      very grateful for your help.

As I say, I've no direct experience with this drive. Might be worth browsing the threads on this forum (using the "search" tool) to see whether they provide a clue:
