are you using movie maker 2? xp sp2?

recapture the tape in the auto setting

Best quality for playback on my computer (recommended)
then use mediainfo to look at the aspect ratio and file size

with such a small ccd and entry level camcorder there's little point in "raw format"

Now I am packing my bags to return to my 'base' in Abu Dhabi. Would download the rest and post the results.

By the way I rechecked the specs of the camcorder and everywhere it said it has native 16:9 aspect ratio. Yet the Mediainfo analysis of the AVI file says it is 4:3? Any idea???

I suspect that the dv tape is 16:9 but the file you captured got changed in the capture or else the camera didn't take the 16:9 setting(unlikely)

software players on the computer do funny things with video

          got it!!

movie maker (version 2.1) has an Option menu in the Tools. Default AR under 'Advanced' is 4:3. that squished my video. lucky that I have not erased my tape.

I upgraded flick and it defaulted to pal, wondered why my player said "not a ntsc disk"

You think you have something figured out and then you realize it really is "rocket science"
