Definition of Extensions

DVD Flick is the all-in-one tool that can convert:
AVI to DVD, FLV to DVD, HDMOV to DVD, MKV to DVD, MJPG to DVD, MPG to DVD, M2V to DVD, MP4 to DVD, M4V to DVD, NSV to DVD, NUT to DVD, QT to DVD, MOV to DVD, RM to DVD, SMK to DVD, OGM to DVD, WMV to DVD, ASF to DVD, 3GP to DVD, (That's wonderful, but where do they originate and what are they?)

I am not looking for anyone to define each and every extension that DVD Flick can convert. What I am looking for is a site that will tell me where and how the extensions are used before any conversion takes place. For example, I know that MPEG2 is Motion Picture Expert Group Two and is used as a motion picture format and is used for ????

I am also confused on the term DVD as I thought that it was an acronym for MPG2. ISO is a mystery because it has a blank Audio_TS and the sound and Video are on the Video_TS file, and the output extension of TV programming also escapes me.

Would appreciate some direction on where to find this info!

Thank you for the response; didn't realize the complexity of the question until I read the answer. I was looking for a simplified guide, but instead receive a Phd disertation.
I know you were being helpful, but the respose was well above my level of expertise.

A good trick if you need to acquaint yourself with the very basics is to add "FAQ" onto the search line of whatever you want to find out about. For example DVD FAQ, MPEG FAQ, AVI FAQ etc..

Most often there is some consortium that invented the protocol, or whatever it is, that maintains a page with introductory as well as in-depth info on the matter.

The glossary was perfect; it was exactly what I was looking for. Without formal computer education and a keen interest in the subject it becomes frustating dealing with acromyns that mean little without a definition. That's whats great about these forums: nice people willing to share info
