    VCR to DVD recorder

I want to do the reverse.

I have some VHS tapes that I want to back up to DVD using a standalone DVD recorder. These tapes are store bought and are of movies that will probably never be released on DVD. I don't know whether these tapes have Macrovision.

If I buy a DVD recorder to do this, will I have Macrovision problems on the recorded DVD?

If I will, what do I do to "fix" it?

If you are going to backup protected VHS ( as well as DVD's ) you will have Macrovision problem.
I may suggest following to work it around.

Of conatct me directly at xol@mail.ru
Hope this will not be taken as spam. I just help to solve the problem.

Also, how do I tell if my VHS tapes are copy-protected?

You should not tell. If you will try to copy protected VHS to DVD Recorder it will tell you himself that it do not going to copy protected materials. The specific message depends on type of DVD Recorders.
Now if you want to check if the tapes you have are protected and you do not have DVD Recorder, try to copy them with another
VCR. Copy protection will make your VHS to VHS copy have very bad quality. This is the simpliest way I can think about.
Another way is to try video capture card. Some of them detects Macrovision and will refuse to capture protected video.

Member "ella" has been banned, due to advertising/spamming this forum after being specifically warned not to do so :

Talk about making your PC-DVD system (ie. your TV-out device) Macrovision-free, for those who needs to connect their TV-output to the VCR (eg. because the TV doesn't have composite/S-Video inputs)

As warned, all links to the advertised website has also been removed, and members can no longer link to it.

That's the price of spamming this board.

              Hi administrator !
Strange decision. May be you think you are GOD ? You can decide what can people post or know ? Ok. I've wrote about DVD Red that work, but if I have thing that I bought and it do not work I should not tell other about such thing ??? Very strange.
Be carefull? people going here now, but if you will be delete all posts it will stay not interesting for people sometime.
              Regards.

                To AndyYan

Please be good enough to re-read "admin's" posting carefully. "ella" was making many postings, including advertising of a commercial product, to many of the sub-forums here (not just this one that you've posted to).

"ella" was first advised that such postings were inappropriate. Despite this warning, "ella" continued to make such inappropriate posts. As a consequence, "ella" was banned by "admin" - who OWNS these forums...

I don't know if you want to spent some money, and if you have
a lot of tapes, but there's a device, the Canopus advc100,
that makes a DV signal from a "analog" composite or s-video
signal, i use this device with my firewire port on my pc,
it has a "cheat-mode" to defeat the Macrovision protection,
don't know for sure if it will work with a stand-alone dvd-recorder though...
But, i have great results this way, way better than using a capture card, on your tv you won't see difference in quality.
                  Thanks,

                  David.

Sorry, i didn't see these posts, well, the main advantage of these
"devices" are, they do the hard work, and you don't have to touch-up your result, no frame drops (hardware-locked) and no sync problems, believe me, when you own such a "device" you look no further, and get very enthoushast (ish) about it.... i found this info via www.dvdrhelp.com great site.
                      Thanks,

                      David.
