Vdub (in all it's permutations) is a very nice tool. The link is for the version that can import an mpeg, which most other versions complain about.
I rate tmpgenc encoder a 3 out of 5, although it get's a bonus point for it's mpeg tools.
Mainconcept's mpeg encoder is simply faster. It has almost every option that tmpgenc does, and some that it doesn't. Yes, it can be daunting to use, but also has a superb online (downloadable .pdf) manual.
I find it's output less blocky, especially on lowmotion scenes, dark/black backgrounds.

      Nuff said, 4 of 5 points !!!

And if it had mp4 support, I would even vote 5 points...

I use Vdub mpeg2. An essential, excellent, free software.

Vdub mpeg2 allows you to import mpeg files. I don't think Vdub mod will do this.

vdubmod does infact allow you to import mpeg-1/2 files, and allows avi, maktrosa and ogm output.

soulhunter, vdubmod cannot output mpeg like you said... it seems it can output an MPEG stream into an AVI container... and the resulting file is only playable with ffdshow. i tried to convert the new avi/mpeg (i dont know what to call it ) to a mpeg-2 container so i could burn it to dvd, but it did not work.

                          For me the link works...

Try copy/paste the URL instead of clicking !!!

If it does not work, you can find this option under...

Encoder -> Output -> Store frames to external file -> MPEG1
