My friend sent me a "AVSEQ01.MPG" file, it is off a SVCD and when I try to play it, i get get some weird results:

In PowerDVD I get no picture and strange high pitch clicking noises.

In windows media player I get the same sounds but there is the first frame of the movie with green patches and distortion over it.. then it stops.

    Windows XP (fresh install)
    Kyro II
    Athlon XP 1800+
    512 MB DDR
    ECS K7S5A (SiS735) motherboard

when you have it loaded in wmp right click on the screen and
check properties. see what information you have on the video and audio codec. after you determine this search for the codecs on the net i'm assuming that the problem you are having is due to the wrong codecs are trying to play the file.

Hmmmm.. recently i installed the Elecard MPEG2 Video Decoder to see if that would help and that seems to have got a picture, but now there is black and white squares dancing around

Video Codec: Elecard MPEG2 Video Decoder

        Audio Codec: Moonlight Odio Dekoda

Since i installed the Elecard thing, I can now hear vague muffled voices from the film which is a big improvment from *crackle beep beep*.. still not even remotley watchable though ..

        Any more suggestions ?
        Thx all

          poor original

it could be that the source file is of poor quality
if that is the fact then you can not improve it no matter what you do. if you have the correct codecs installed then you are subject to the originators skill in recording

No, its the fact that I cant play *ANY* SVCD, i have tried other SVCDs and I get the same results.

Also, my friend has tried this movie and it works fine.

              updates

have you updated your player lately?
if you are using outdated software it might not work.
try to update to the newest windows media player.
it has to be software, incorrect codecs, or hardware.
start from scratch and check everything.
check to make sure you were not using a substandard hack for a codec. if it plays then it will work. unless you recorded it on really poor medium. have you tried the exact cd on your friends dvd/rom? did he use a different medium? have you reinstalled the software and codecs to make sure there has not been corruption?
it could also be in the playback filter. is it being played back by the correct codec?
