    Method one:
Open file in Windows Media Player 6.4 and go to File -> Properties -> Advanced Tab. There you will find the codecs in use and you should be able to tell which is the video codec.

    Method two:
Open file in Virtualdub and go to File -> File Information. The information given will be more detailed than that from method one.

MovieID is the best method I found to find out what codec was used to encode it. Neither Enchanters methods, no offense to him, won't work in all cases because you are only looking at the decoder filter being used. In the media player scenario, ffdshow and various other DirectShow filters playback multiple formats so you would have no idea the difference between any version of DivX, XviD or MS-MPEG4. And for V-Dub, it does tell the difference between DivX3, XviD and DivX 5, but DivX 4 still comes up as DivX 5.
