How can we copy DVD on the PC with DVD writer?

Hello, I was wondering if there's any way to either drag the files from a DVD source to the PC and then burn a copy onto DVD-R, or if there's any such way that you can back up your store bought DVDs with a DVD writer? I know most of today's DVDs have code protection, but I would like to back up most of my collection so as to never have to worry about losing them. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.
