Can only see MIDDLE of the screen for movies played.

Hi, I have some VCDs, SVCDs. I used to have no problem playing my VCDs in Windows Media Player. Then, I got an SVCD and I couldn't play it on the computer. So I downloaded various things and installed including Elecard MPEG2 player, Elecard MPEG3 Codec, and WinDVD trail version etc., just to try them all out.

Well, it worked and I can now play all SVCDs in Windows Media Player as well as MPEG2's player. But now, even all VCDs and SVCDs and DVDs, everything I play, I can only see the MIDDLE of the screen.

What I mean is, when I play any movie, the top, bottom, sides all have about 2 inches trimmed off so I can't see them. I know because only the top 1/2 of the subtitles are on screen. Also, when I do a screen capture with MPEG2 player or WinDVD, it shows the WHOLE screen in the .bmp caught! Even the parts i don't see (the edges).

I tried uninstalling the Codec and all that stuff but to no avail! The thing is, I can play the VCDs in my VCD player on my TV, and see the entire screen, but on the computer, the top, bottom and sides are missing about 2 inches each.

    Please help!!!!

I honestly have never seen or heard of this. Have you tried re-installing windows?

Well no, because I have Windows XP pro. And if I try to reinstall it will ask me if I want to repair something (which is rubbish, as it just gets you into a dos type prompt) or to install, in which case it makes you format the hard disk.

Someone suggested that there was a fix for this and that it is Win XP problem ?

Also someone suggested that maybe I have a screen size setting in a video setting that should be set to "original size"?

And get this, I went to Microsoft suport site and I found this.

The thing is, I do NOT have a "Oblong LCD" screen but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. I played with Windows Media Player 6.2 and it worked at first, in that the screen was right. BUT. There was no sound, there was an error message which I closed.
So, in order to see what the error message was, I went back and restarted the movie in WMP 6.2 and this time, THE SCREEN WAS OFF AGAIN! I had NOT changed anything or any settings and all of a sudden on the second attempt, the sound was working but the video was again offscreen!!!

          PLEASE HELP!!!!

Ah! Such are the travails of using a new product from Gates, Inc. I'll be real interested to follow this one to see if anyone can figure something out, as I am planning to upgrade (one machine only) to XP.

The other thing I'm planning? I'm planning to not do that upgrade until you folks throw a few more hammers at that O/S.
It may look like I'm doing nothing, but actually, at a cellular level I'm quite busy.

You may want to try another software player such as Powerdvd.

You may want to check the elecard's manufacturer's websites for drivers/patches.

I tried it all. Not work.

I got it working in Windows Media Player by turning off the hardware acceleration on the options, performance tab. But I can't get it to work on the other programs like powerDVD or WinDVD because there is no such option. How do I change hardware acceleration for these programs?

I did change it in display instead of the video player programs but this made the videos not playable at all.
