    new! Windows Media 9

I have been test the new CODEC of Microsoft named Corona (series 9), included the new Windows Media Player 9 for all WIN (10MBs for this Pack)

It support 5.1ch Audio (CBR and VBR, 24bit, 96Khz), and just 48Kbps(in VBR mode), WMA can compare with MP3PRO and 128Kbps standard_MP3
WMV look very good, equal to DivX 5, and you can Record DVD directly from Windows Media Player 9

    Everyone let try it
    With joy.

That's strange, my download went just fine. I don't think they check which OS, you use when you download the file. But I'am using XP, so I'am not sure.

I have just started my first test

                    Windows Media Player 9 (Beta)

Its for XP only - when you click on the link in an earlier thread and proceed to download, a check is made as to the Windows version and you are then able to download the WMP version appropriate to your Windows OS version. WMP 7.1 is the latest you can run on Win 9x.

Windows Media Player 9 is still at beta stage, some features like drag and drop of video clips to the player's window do not work as before and you will see a message at the bottom right of your screen that you are running software for testing purposes only!

If you decide to uninstall due to unworkable issues (there are a few) then you will need to use System restore. Only download if you really must try it.

Microsoft has made some pretty big claims. I'm anxiously awaiting for some test to find out what wmp 9 is really all about

Is'nt that the player only ?. I know my german is'nt near as good as it should be.

Funny thing is, I tried installing the encoder on my win2k box, and it works just fine.

                              First test completed

I have completed my first test of Windows Media 9.

The test was done as follows.
Test movie: Not Another Teen Movie. Region 2 PAL version
                              Movie Length: 1:25:22
Encoding video only, target file size: 650 MB.
                              Encoding Resolution: 704*384.
The divx5 encoding was made using GKnot. The Wm9 encoding was made from a fake avi file, created with link2, from the avs file created by GKnot.

At maximum quality in divx5, with B-frames and GMC turned on, this movie takes up 1.67GB. Which means that I'am encoding to approx. 38% of the maximum filesize in divx5. This is quite a bit lower than what is normally recommended. I did this to make any quality problems more noticeable.

                              Filesize prediction:
For divx5 I used a bitrate of 1060, as suggested by GKnot. This turned out to be oversized by 0.5 MB

For WM9 I calculated the bitrate without any avi overhead to be 1065, And trusted WM9 to be correct in saying that it needed 9kbps for overehead, which means that I assigned 1056 kbps video bitrate.
This turned out to be exactly 16 MB oversized, which strongly suggest that WM9 correctly calculates 1Kbit = 1024bit. Despite the fact it seems to suggest 1Kbit = 1000bit when you assign the bitrate.

                              Test results:
In my opinion, the divx5 encoding looks significantly more detailed durring high actions scenes than WM9. In low motion scenes divx5 also looks slightly better than WM9.

                              Adding Audio:
I tried encoding the audio track with wma at 64kbit. The quality sounded resonably good, but I'am no audio freak, so I consider myself to be a very poor judge of audio quality.
I then tried to mux the audio with the WM9 encoded video. I had a rather hard time working with the windows media streams editor. And the output turned out to be a 457 MB file, where the last 30 minutes of video appear to be missing. Maybe it will work better if you process both audio and video durring the encoding.
