If you have an s-video jack on your computer, and one on your tv, this is the cleanest way to get high quality video to your tv.
You can play sound on your computer speakers or rca plug the
sound to your tv.

I have a 25 foot svideo cable and get crystal clear pics on my 32" tv. best buy -$25 bucks

When I output to TV from my Sony Vaio laptop using the sony TV-out jack, I must change my computer screen resolution to, I believe, 640X480 resolution for the image to fit on my (ancient RCA 1995) TV. May or may not be applicable to your situation. For example, your widescreen TV may be smart enough to understand the signal coming from your computer without needing to do this...

Actually, I think the max. resolution is more to do with the video card than the TV set.
Normally, once you have enabled the TV-out function, the choice of video modes will be limited, so if you're running at 1280X1024, you will probably find it's kicked down to 800X600.
Some cards support hi-res output to TV, but the higher resolutions are wasted on TV's.

i av some other problems too, on my Display Properties, the whole TV Output Box in advanced is greyed out, and well my TV dut have a Round S-VHS thing, it has to go to scart i think, like S-VHS to SCART

also, i thaught this wud deel with sound too, but if not, what sud i do then coz the sound has to come out of the TV not the PC.

For audio out you gotta connect yout soundboard to the tv with a headphone jack-to-RCA adaptor cable.
As for tv-out: what video card do you have exactly?

For what it's worth - I'm pretty sure ATI cards (and probably others) won't let you go into TV-out mode unless there is actually something connected to the output. So perhaps once you've got the scart lead connected, the button will not be greyed out.

Try a program called TVTool. Its the best i've found for output to TV if you have an NVidia video card. It also supports resolutions of 640x480, 720x480 (DVD), and 800x600. It is commercial so you will have to pay for it, but the demo allows up to 5 minutes of viewage to decide if you want it or not.

Also, try to use a resolution thats closer to your Divx movie resolution for less video distortion (when resizing).

k i thik i have it sorted ill get a S-VHS to Scart cable, and use TVtool coz it werks with my TV encoder chip.

but what about audio will it transmit the audio to the tv coz this little plug i have has a brown female connector and an S-VHS female that merege int one s-vhs.
if i used with (i think its S/Pdif output or sumthing), so if i turn on Spdif output wich is the brown thing i think, will it transfer soud too?

i bet i sound dumb

Many cards do require a device to be pluged into the TV out (be it RCA or S-VHS) but some even have to have the device pluged in prior to powering the PC up. I had this problem with my ATI all in wonder pro (old card now). took me half a day to figure this as it was not mentioned in the manual (which i read only after 1 1/2 hours fafing around).

The video card does not provide sound!
That is taken care of by the sound card.
Have a look and see what your computer speakers are plugged into. This is the sound card, and you want to plug this into your telly AS WELL AS the video lead from the video card.

If you are using SCART input to your TV, you will need a lead that has both S-Video AND sound.

Something like:

If you use a SCART -> S-Video lead that does not have sound connectors, you will get no sound out the telly.

Yeah. If there is a Maplin near you (England, right?) you want to get these:
