how do i turn a dvd .vob file to a divx avi file

i just used smartripper to get some vob files on me computer but they are a bit over sized at 6gb or so and i want to turn them into .avi files so they are like divx files and become alot smaller. please tell me what programs i need to use and how to use them the way i need to use them to turn the .vob into a .avi. Thanks for help on this.
