    Hey DPD,

You can convert your AVI's to play on a standalone player by converting them to VCD, depending on whether or not your players accepts VCD's. Most newer one's should. And to backup DVD's you're going to need a DVD-ROM, and it's a bit more complicated than copying it, you'll need to rip it to your hard disk first, then encode it to DivX and finally burn to CD. Alternatively you can convert your DVD straight to VCD. If you decide to do the VCD straight away, be prepared for some quality loss, with normal VCD you can expect something around VHS quality or just above. A normal VCD will takes two discs. For more indepth explanations and guides, go here.

    Good Luck!

Another good site to help guide you through what your going to be doing is
Download free video and audio software. Old versions, user reviews, version history, screenshots.
