Although it's probably one of the many phony files available in the download world, in order to determine which codec(s) you need for a particular .AVI, you should do the following:

    1) Load the file into VirtualDub

    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

    3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

Two little programs is all you need, Virtual Dub & TMPGEnc. There is lots of advice in many of the posts here.

Virtualdub is a video encoding tool with many capabilities (in simple words), which can also be used to examine a given video file. Info on the codecs used to compress the video can be obtained in the way that Setarip described.

            the info....

i couldnt attach the jpg so here's the info:

            Video Stream

            Frame size‚fps (µs per frame) ------- 352x288, 4.000 fps (250000 µs)
            # of frames (time): ------- 19656 (1:21:54)
            Decompressor: ------- Uncompressed RGB1
Number of key frames: ------- 19656
            Min/avg/max/total key frame size: ------- 12672/12672/12672 (243243K)
Min/avg/max/total delta frame size: ------- (no delta frame)

there was nothing in any of the
            Audio Stream
fields at all...... should I just delete the stupid files and try a new one?

It is definitely a phony file. The obvious signs are:

4 frames per second (fps) - which would run like a slide show

                Uncompressed RGB

                No audio information
