    You need to convert that particular file into a VCD-compliant MPEG file. Nero and/or TMPEnc can do the job for you.

            They are different kinds of compression. Vcdhelp.com is a great site for such information. A search on google.com will reveal in detail the many differences between mpeg-2 and mpeg-4. In general, mpeg-4 was designed to allow higher quality and lower bitrates. MPEG-2 is the compression used in DVD's.

            DIVX/XVID use MPEG-4 compression
            (x)SVCD and DVD use MPEG-2
            the (x)VCD format is based on mpeg-1

                The DivX and XviD codecs, just to name a few, are MPEG-4. They are designed for low-bitrates and are ideal for transferring over the internet, where transfer speed is relatively much slower compared to a local network.

                The MPEG-2 codec is used in DVDs and SVCD (not VCD), and in contrast with MPEG-4, it is designed for high-bitrates and as such, is ideal for high-capacity mediums, such as DVD.

                        You're welcome.

                        To answer your other question,
                        "so to play a vcd..i have to have it in mpeg1 format...or can i use mpeg2 format to put a movie on a cd-r"

                        VCD = MPEG-1
                        SVCD = MPEG-2

                        The latter has a higher resolution and hence takes up more space. You can fit only about 50+ min of movie on a SVCD disc, as opposed to 70+ min on a VCD disc. Choose which you prefer.

                          so mpeg1and 2 are the only formats that you can put on a cd-r to play on a dvd player....i think i am understanding you.....thank you

                              Here you go:
                              1. Open file in Virtual/nandub
                              2. Set both Video and Audio tabs to Direct Stream Copy
                              3. Use the Mark In/Out buttons to specify the start and end of the first segment
                              4. Go to File -> Save as AVI and give a name to the new file
                              5. Repeat steps (1) - (4) for the second segment
