Cannot get VirtualDub to capture above 320x240 ??

I am using VirtualDub to capture video (in this case to uncompressed AVI). It works fine at a resolution of 320x240 or lower, but when I try to set the resolution higher (either vertical or horizontal or both) I get the following pop-up error message:

    Error 418: Unsupported video format.

I have tried setting the resolution in VirtualDub by going to Video->Format and also with Video->Set Custom Format. I have also tried each of the available "Data Formats" under these menus.

I have an AVER-TV capture card. The software that came with the card lets me capture MPEG I and II, with resolutions at 720x480 and even higher. Does this mean it should not be a limitation of my video card?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!!

VirtualDub was designed to use VFW (Video for Windows) vidcap drivers; if you have Win XP or 2000 (or Millenium edition) you're likely using a WDM (Windows Driver Model) driver. VirtualDub can only communicate with WDM by means of a "wrapper", which is probably provided by Microsoft and limited to 320x240 resolution. So unless there are VFW drivers for your card (I have no idea), you're stuck with 320x240--in VirtualDub. There are other free programs available which use the WDM architecture, such as VirtualVCR
