converting audio stream into mp3

does anyone know what is the best way/tool to convert audio stream (PCM format) within motion jpeg video into mp3 prefferably 128 kbit/s 44khz 16 bit mono or even better variable bit rate?

If I understand correctly, you desire to CHANGE the audio format as part of the video, and not EXTRACT it to keep as a separate sound file. If so, do the following:

Load the video into VirtualDub. IF VDub accepts the file, click on the "Video" dropdown menu and select "Direct Stream Copying". Click on the "Audio" dropdown menu and click on "Full Processing Mode".

Click on "Compression" and select a sound codec format and the desired sampling rate and frequency. Click on the "File" dropdown menu and select "Save As .AVI" and save the file with a new name.

Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for. Although I had to install radium mp3 codec becouse the one installed in windows doesn't support bitrates I need. Anyway now it work and it works great.
