MPEG1 conversions

I download a number of episodes where the format is MPEG1, making their size somewhere around 430MB. I have a fair amount of HD space, but they're still a bit larger than I like. I have been able to use VirtualDub to convert them to Divx .avi files, but only if the MPEG is not corrupted at all. I've had several where they have "Invalid end of file" errors, and I can't seem to get past that. Does anyone know of an MPEG1 'fixer' to correct this? Or another program that might more easily convert the MPEG1 to MPEG2 or .avi?
