Burning movies that will play in dvd player?

Hi, I know this might sound stupid, but I'm wondering how to burn a disk so it will play in my regular dvd player. It says that it will play vcd's so I'm wondering if, like in Nero I burn it as a vcd will it play?
File extension is divx.avi, I copied it as a regular Data file and it would not play.

But before you burn any vcd's, to avoid wasting them, make sure to check if your dvd player can read vcd's. Check out www.vcdhelp.com and check the dvd players section for info on your dvd player.

in my opinion vcd's work on how many minutes, obviously 80min per cd. So i you have a movie that is 90min you'll need to split the file before the 80min mark. Then drag the file into nero using the vcd setting. nero will convert a .avi or .mpg to .dat to create the vcd.
.avi will take alot longer to process because it virtually has to convert it to .mpg before renaming the extension to .dat.

OK, I was just reading another post that said Nero was flawed as a convertor but fine to use as a copier. Is this true, because I'd love to be able to just zip into Nero and Voila' , right?

I use ulead dvd workshop to make dvd's
its easy to use and it does a good job.
