What exactly is the sort of advantage that you are seeking in this alternative? As far as I care, CDs are dirt cheap nowadays.

i guess greater stability and ability to use them again (rewritable-cd's are still bit expensive)

I don't know how much CD-R and CD-RW medias cost where you are, but over here they sell for really low price. It's hard for me to think of an alternative to portable media (which I believe is what you are looking for). Perhaps you should take a look at portable harddrives and Jaz drives, though the price will most likely exceed that of CD.

As for stability, I don't quite get it. If you are talking about reliability, as long as you are using medias from a reputable brand, you should be alright.

          yeah i meant reliability
i live in netherlands and rewritables cost about 3,50 - 4 euro per piece, and i use a lot of cds so that isn't really cheap.
i know about jaz drives; not bad but still expensive.
i guess i'm gonna stick with cds for now

            Alternatives: tapes Just kidding.

On a more serious note. DVD-R media is getting cheaper.

And I don't understand why you are so concerned about prices for rewriteable CD's, just use standard CD-R's. IMHO optical media should only be used for stuff you want to keep permanently anyway.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.
