Splitting the movie on 2 or 3 CD's

Sorry I'm a beginner, and is the first time I request the forum, so do not laugh.

I'm using Gordian Knot to "copy" DVD's. In my first experience I selected the option to split the film in two CD's of 700 MB. In fact, the movie size shown in the program was less than that number, and I was hoping the program would do the splitting automatically. Fortunately the final result was a movie with very good quality, but only in one avi file with 1,35 GB.

I tried to split the movie in VirtualDub but two things happened:

    1. The program introduced a delay of some mseconds, so the voices heard don't match with the movement of the lips...

    2. When I load the subtitles in the second avi file, they doesn't appear...

So, is there somethig I can do about this?

Use nandub to split the AVI into parts:
    1. Open file in nandub
    2. Set both Video and Audio tabs to Direct Stream Copy
    3. Use the Mark In/Out buttons to specify the start and end of the first segment
    4. Go to File -> Save as AVI and give a name to the new file
    5. Repeat steps (1) - (4) for the second segment

As for the subtitles, assuming you are using Vobsub (and hence SUB files) for the subtitles, you can VobSub Cutter to cut the subtitle script file into parts.

Always cut at a "key frame" to avoid synch issues.

        Thank you, Enchanter.

Now I see why you are the "King of Digital Video".

With Nandub everything was perfect - I divided the avi file in two smaller avi files with total synchronization audio / video.

As for subtitles, the point is when I try to open a subtitle file under VobSub (DirectVobSub 2.23), nothing happens. I think the program is not working or is not well configured. The subtitles I have were picked up in a internet subtitle site. I really would like to know how to work with this program, because it seems to be the best for "ripping" subtitles. Can you help me?

        Thanks again.

You need to make sure that you have the accompanying IDX file as well. I'm not sure if there is any way you can work with the 'lone' SUB file though.

            VobSub

Definitively I have a problem with VobSub.

SmartRipper produces several *.vob files, one *.idx file, one *.lst file, one *.ifo file and finally one *.txt file.

Afterwards, in VobSub I choose DirectVobSub Configure and click on the "open" button. Then I select the *.idx file, which appears in the adjoining box.

After that, even if I click "ok" or "apply", anything happens!...

The same succeed with the other VobSub programs (vobSub Configure, VobSub Cutter, etc...)

I installed VobSub in another computer and the same occurs.

( I've downloaded VobSub 2.23 from the official site. )

Re-rip the subtitles (by opening the respective IFO file in Vobsub). Vobsub will generate one SUB file and one IDX file, both of which are related to each others. After doing this step, try splitting the subtitle again.

How can I open *.ifo files if VobSub only allows to open *.idx, *.smi, *.sub, *.srt, *.psb, *.ssa or *.ass files?

I can't open the *.ifo file generated by SmartRipper nor the *.ifo files in the DVD!...

Wich version of VobSub do you have?

Can you explain the procedures step-by-step?

                Sorry for the insistence.

Direct vobsub is only for displaying subtitles, you need to rip them first with vobsub configure.
                  Open vobsub configure, not Directvobsub.
                  Code:
                  C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe vobsub.dll,Configure
Click open and select 'Files of type'->'IFO and VOB'

A full guide can be found at

                    Thank you guys.

I did succeeded to rip the subtitles with VobSub Configure. My mistake was I didn't notest that this program has the option in the box "Files of Type" to open "Ifo and Vobs, for creating idx/sub (*.ifo)" files.

I obtainned one *.idx file and one *.sub file. I've renamed them and put them in the same directory of the avi file. Using BSPlayer the subtitles are loaded automatically.

Now I'm going to try to divide the subtitles for each avi part.

                    Thanks, once again.

                      Finally everything is working well.

Gordian Knot produces divx movies with very good quality.

Nandub allows to divide the avi's into smaller parts (2 or 3 cd's).

VobSub Configure rips the subtitles permitting to display the original subtitles of the DVD (obviously with the best quality).

VobSub Cutter allows to cut with precision the subtitles for each avi part.

And at last Direct VobSub Configure let me find the best position and timing for the subtitles.

Thanks for the help! Without you I wouldn't succeed.
