AVI to CVD

Is there any software out there that will let me convert AVI files to CVD format?

Aah, young crimefighter, you do realize that "CVD" is not necessarily a typo, meant to be "VCD", don't you? ;>}

China Video Disc

One of the original three applicants to replace VideoCD and sponsored mostly by Chinese government back in late 1990s. Eventually it didn't win the competition -- SVCD became the 2nd generation video disc format in China and in the rest of the Asia.

Anyway, as it gained some popularity and is virtually identical to SVCD, most of the DVD players which support SVCD, support also CVD.

CVD's main differences to SVCD are the fact that it uses different subtitle format and the fact that it uses 352x480/576 resolution instead of SVCD's 480x480/576. This makes is ideal format for storing data on CD waiting to be moved to DVD-R, because DVD-Video specs know CVD's native resolution -- and don't recognize SVCD's resolution. So, by encoding movies directly to CVD format, you can store them on CD and play them with DVD player and at later date, transfer the movie to DVD-R without re-encoding it.

Yes I do realize that cvd is not svcd/vcd. I think TMPGenc/TMPGEnc Plus (and the other encoders I mentioned) would be able to create cvd's.

I have TMPEGENC and it doesn't have an output option for CVD.

The reason I inquired is that I have Karaoke player that can read CVD formats and want to convert my avis to CVD.

Setarip said that CVD and SVCD are almost identical.

I wonder if that means the CVD player will be able to play SVCD?

I'll have to give that a try.

Just take an SVCD template and modify the resolution to 352 x 480 for NTSC CVD or 352 x 576 for PAL CVD. That's all there is to it. When you burn the resulting file to CD use the SVCD setting in your burning software, but turn off compliance checks.

Hi Haroldw,

I'm not quite sure I understand how I am to do what you are suggesting, Which program do I use to do that? TMPEGENC has no option that I could find that allows me to set the resolution other than being able to selct SVCD as the output format. And that format is 480x480.

where do I change the 480 to 352?

In TMPGEnc click on the "Setting" radio button. A dialog box will appear, where you can specify your required settings.

1) In TMPGEnc click on the "Setting" radio button
2) Select "Unlock.mcf"
3) You will now be able to access all of the settings available under the "Video" tab, "Advanced" tab, etc.

In the settings area the size box is shaded out and wont let me change the size. And there is nothing called "Unlock.MCF

MAybe you have a different version of TMPEGENC. Mine is the Plus version.

We are speaking of the "Setting" radio button at the lower left corner of the TMPGEnc primary screen. (It sounds like you're referring to one of the tabs at the top of the primary window)...

I dont know what the confusion here is.

At the bottom of the main screen are three buttons:

Setting Load Save

I click the setting button and another window pops up which has all the tabs. the screen that is there already is the video tab screen. It is there that i see the following;

Stream Type (which is shaded out no changes allowed)

Size (which show 480x480, also shaded out so I can't change it)

That's my problem ! How do I make the size area of the screen become un-shaded so I can change it to 352x480?
